Rotorua, one of the most frequent destinations for tourists interested in experiencing something of New Zealand indigenous Maori culture, has two Jade Factory stores. One store, the Jade Factory Souvenirs has a wide range of souvenir items including many moderately priced gifts suitable for taking home to family and friends.
In the Jade Factory and Gift Centre across the road, you'll find a huge selection of exquisite jade pieces such as earrings and pendants, and other jewelry items made not only of jade but also of bone, and our local and distinctive blue and green hued paua shell. You'll also find larger unique jade sculptures. These have been carved by master carvers on-site or personally selected from artists in New Zealand and elsewhere.
Our resident carvers in Rotorua strongly represent the spirit of both traditional indigenous carving and more contemporary interpretations of traditional designs and motifs. Most experienced and notable of these is Lewis Tamihana Gardner, winner of the prestigious Mana Pounamu award for traditional Maori Design, 2001-2002. Lewis traces his ancestry to a number of Maori tribes - Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Awa, and Ngai Tahu.
Another addition to our team is Sen Cai Zhang a master carver from Southern China. He was brought to New Zealand as part of cultural exchange to share and blend two carving traditions.
